Because dues are billed annually and collected on May 31, the application fee, which includes the first year dues, is pro-rated to accommodate the bi-annual membership admissions cycle. The application fee for the six-month cycle ending 1 April includes the first year dues, and the application fee for the for the six-month cycle ending 1 October includes the first half-year dues, both ending the following May 31. Application fees are due when this membership application is completed and the application fee is non-refundable.

An active membership is for members who have been actively engaged in the production or creation of visual effects for not less than five (5) years, within the last ten (10) years preceding application for membership. A candidate for active membership must demonstrate visual effects abilities, a professional reputation and personal objectives which are consistent with the society's objectives. Candidates for active membership must be endorsed by two (2) active members in good standing and have Letters of Recommendation written on their behalf.
An associate membership is for members whose professional activities have involved a close relationship with, and exceptional achievements in, the field of visual effects for not less than five (5) years. Associate members enjoy the rights and privileges of active members, but may not vote on the election of the Board of Directors, or on any nominations for awards presented at award shows or ceremonies organized or sponsored by the society. A candidate for associate membership must demonstrate a professional reputation and personal objectives which are consistent with the society's objectives. Candidates for associate membership must also have two (2) Letters of Endorsement from members who may be active, retired or associate members.

Candidates applying for associate membership must also provide 2 Letters of Endorsement from members, who are active, retired or associate members. All letters of recommendation can be emailed to info@visualeffectssociety.com. Make sure your endorser types your name in the subject heading of the email and addresses the email to the Membership Committee.
Your endorser should take the responsibility of writing an endorsement letter seriously! To write a meaningful letter, your endorsers should know you personally. Just as important, they should know your work, and it must exemplify the highest PROFESSIONAL standards of the visual effects industry. Questions they should ask themselves might be, “Would I recommend this person for a job? Would I want to work with him/her?”
Exclusions to the two endorsement letter requirement:

winners of Emmy, BAFTA, Academy Award or VES Award for visual effects.
returning Visual Effects Society member.

The Visual Effects Society limits the number of new applicant's an active member can endorse to two endorsements per year. Therefore, if you do not see your preferred endorser for the first endorser autosuggest list, try typing their name in the second endorsement box. If their name does not appear in either autosuggest list, they have already receive two endorsement requests for this calendar year and you must choose another endorser.
Work histories must show a minimum of 5 years of VFX experience in the last 10 years. Applications submitted with incomplete information will not be accepted. We need your complete visual effects work history, to evaluate your visual effects work experience. Start with your most recent assignment and list your entire work experience since you began your career in visual effects. Use project titles, and note employers or direct supervisors as appropriate. Indicate your job title or description clearly (software engineer, cg supervisor, effects animator, special effects technician, etc.). Be sure to note each project’s start and stop date. Use the next button as necessary. You may attach this information on a separate document of your own making, but it must be in substantially the same format, and contain all the requested information. The documentation of the qualifying 5 years should be entered here. Links to IMDb.com, or similar web-based credit lists, will not be accepted as submissions for this part of your application.
